It's Fall!
Fall, Autumn, Harvest, Cold, Crunchy, Colorful, Blustery, Pie, Pecan, Turkey, Thanksgiving, Music...
Fall evokes certain wonderful memories. Come to think of it, it is quite funny how different seasons evoke different feelings, images, and words. One thing that has been coming to mind quite frequently this fall is the NC Symphony. Autumn, reminds me of dressing up in warm yet sophisticated clothes, and driving down town to see the NC Symphony.

Most of the time we would recieve complimentary tickets from older friends when they could not go themselves, or we would find ourselves with comp tickets from our music teachers. Thus, that would result in usually just two or three tickets up for grabs in our family of seven. This led to handing out the tickets with regard to importance of the said performance in our music studies. My brother and sister would attain high ranking in regards to violin concerts, and I would claim the orchestra performances, especially if they had a couple of good flute parts.
Later on, we found a program that allowed students to attend NC Symphony concerts for much cheaper then the normal price. My friend and I went to an Italian Aria Concert, and it was there that I truly experienced Opera for the first time. I had been aware of Opera as only a very stiff form of singing in a foreign language with some very ear splitting pitches at times, but that night I was exposed to much more than just stiff singing. For the first time, I actually saw Opera, and that made the biggest diference. The singers brought their songs to life by acting out the emotions of the arias. And, they had supertitles, which aided those of us with limited knowledge of foreign languages. Now, I can't say that I love Opera. My friend and I still poked and grinned at each other whenever there was a surprising note in the higher registers. But, I now have a much better apreciation of Opera.
I don't think we realized it at the time, but we were so blessed to be able to grow up with a background of being able to see the NC Symphony so often. My brother and I were even able to see Yo Yo Ma. This background of such quality orchestral playing has expanded my horizons as a musician today as I study music in college. And, it enriched my childhood, opening my eyes to the possibilities of creating great music.

What made the NC Symphony even more special, was thier home venue, Meymandi Concert Hall. Meymandi holds many fond memories for me as an attender and even as a performer. But, that will have to be saved untill the next post. =D
